"ISSC is the Olympics of integrated circuits. The energy and excitement of attending and presenting at the conference are unmatched in this community.

The International Solid-State Circuits Conference ISSCC is the foremost worldwide forum for presentation of advances in solid-state circuits with an emphasis on functional chip realizations demonstrating an advancement in the state-of-the-art. Subject areas of interest include analog, communications, digital, memory, signal processing, sensors, imaging, neural nets, and technology directions. In each of these subject areas circuit techniques, design methodology, chip architecture, algorithms, and device testing are addressed. Every February 3,000 attendees meet in San Francisco for 3 days of contributed paper sessions, evening panel discussions and in depth workshops, short-courses and tutorials. One third of the attendees travel from international locations. In 1998 half of the accepted papers were from North America, and half were from Asia and Europe.  There is stong representation from industry authors, also university, government laboratories and industry-university collaboration.
Awards for best paper, editorial excellence, best evening session, and outstanding student paper attract and reward quality presentations at this event. The Conference offers a unique opportunity for attendees to meet, network and absorb leading edge developments in solid-state circuits.

"Without the information offered by the Journal and the ISSCC, I could never have written any papers or published books. Even my patients have been based on information I learned at the ISSCC."
Kiyoo Itoh, Hitachi

The Custom Integrated Circuit Conference CICC provides a broad-based forum for the exploration of issues concerning ASIC-based system design and product development. Topics such as design methodology, particularly ESDA (Electronic System Design Automation,) circuit design techniques, system-level design, and ASIC chip/system applications are emphasized. CICC focuses on application-specific product concerns. 700 attendees look forward to this four-day event, each fall in Santa Clara, California.  The meeting emphasizes  high-quality technical paper sessions complemented by educational sessions and a vendor exhibit area. This results in a conference aimed at those concerned with a balance between technical innovations and currently available tools and technology options that can be applied to custom/semi-custom-based IC system design, development and manufacture.

Symposium on VLSI Circuits provides an intense but limited size meeting  for more than 400 international researchers and engineers to openly discuss and exchange new ideas and directions in transistor-level circuit design. Its scope covers digital, analog, memory, communications and signal processing applications. Fundamental issues, including innovative circuits and device structures applied to these subject areas are of special interest. It is not required that the circuits have been realized in a fully functional IC chip; however, some reasonable proof of concept is expected.
The annual three-day meeting partially overlaps the Symposium on VLSI Technology, which is held at the same location.  Invited papers on emerging VLSI technologies, as well as discussion sessions on current controversial issues, are featured at the symposium. The meeting location alternates between Japan and the U.S.

"SSCS is particularly important in Europe where the tradition to network outside your own company is weak. Professional interaction is the main reason for the fantastic pace and progress of solid-state circuit."
Christer Svensson, Linkoping University, Sweden

 Awards

TheSolid-State Circuits Award is an IEEE Technical Field Award.  It is given for outstanding contributions in the field of solid-state circuits and is presented annually to an individual or team of not more than three. The award consists of a bronze medal, a certificate, and an honorarium.  Selection criteria include impact, timeliness, quality, societal benefit, technology enhancement and creativity of the contribution, as well as leadership and professional contributions of the individual(s).

The IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society Predoctoral Fellowship is awarded for a single academic year on the basis of academic record and promise, graduate study program, and need. The fellowship includes a stipend, tuition, and a grant to the recipient’s department. Applicants must have completed at least one year of graduate study, be in a Ph.D. program in the area of solid-state circuits, and be a member of IEEE.

Governance

The activities of the Solid-State Circuits Society are governed by a Constitution and Bylaws and administered by an Administrative Committee (AdCom) consisting of 4 officers, 15 elected members-at-large, and 7 standing committee chairs: Awards, Chapters, Education, Meetings, Membership, Nominations, and Publications.
There are two AdCom meetings a year, with one meeting always being held in February with the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC).  The other AdCom meeting is normally held in the August–September time period in conjunction with another SSCS sponsored meeting.

SSCS members are encouraged to become involved in the activities of the Society, their local chapters,  and the Society AdCom.  If you are interested in being considered for an AdCom position, please contact the SSCS Executive Office.
